Roles & Responsibilities

The Directive regarding the management of bathing water (2006/7/EC) sets the basic conditions and criteria for preserving, protecting and improving bathing waters and as well as protecting the human health.
 
The General Secretariat for the Natural Environment and Water of the Ministry of Environment and Energy is committed to achieving full compliance with EU Bathing Water Directive standards in cooperation with the other Secretariats for Water and the Directorates of Public Health & Social Care of the devolved administrations.
 
Regional Secretariats for Water in collaboration with the responsible local authorities and coastal managers, according to the Directive, have the responsibility to post information signs for the public on the bathing water areas of their jurisdiction, and to address the implementation of any precautionary measures in order to prevent pollution and /or to enforce action if necessary.
